IGF-I is usually measured because it reflects, at least in part, the effects of growth hormone. A low IGF-I level may indicate growth hormone deficiency, but this is not necessarily the case. There are also other reasons for low IGF-I levels (e.g. chronic bowel diseases).

In other words, if IGF-I levels are low, growth hormone deficiency must be considered. A clearly normal IGF-I level usually rules out growth hormone deficiency. But what exactly constitutes a clearly normal IGF-I level? The IGF-I result must be genuinely normal, i.e. in the middle of the normal range or above. To be precise, the cut-off point is –1 SD. If the result is below this, growth hormone deficiency must be considered.
